Justin Reich is an educational researcher interested in the future of learning in a networked world. He is the executive director of the PK-12 Initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a research scientist in the MIT Office of Digital Learning, and a lecturer in the Scheller Teacher Education Program. He is also a Fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society, and the co-founder of EdTechTeacher, a professional learning consultancy devoted to helping teachers leverage technology to create student-centered, inquiry-based learning environments.
Each strand presenter will take 10-15 minutes to share a unique perspective on a challenge facing education today.
Joe Erpelding is the Principal at Design39 Campus which provides an ideal environment for student-centered, flexible learning experiences. On a mission to “change the way we do schools,” this hidden gem of a public TK-8 campus provides a unique approach to personalized learning that is human-centered and empathy-fueled.
Mindy Ahrens is the founding Principal at Sisu Academy ( a tuition-free boarding High school in San Diego.) for Underserved and Disengaged youth. Mindy is a former 4th/5th-grade educator at the innovative public school, Design39Campus, in Poway, CA. Prior to this position, she spent 15 years teaching students from preschool to 8th grade in various settings. She studied Project Based Learning techniques in depth and earned an M.Ed. degree in teacher leadership from the High Tech High charter school organization.
Greg Kulowic is a nationally recognized instructor, presenter, and author. He was an early adopter of mobile devices in the classroom and coined the phrase “App Smashing.” Prior to joining EdTechTeacher, Greg Kulowiec spent eight years as a high school history teacher and one year as a technology integration specialist.
Tom Driscoll is a nationally recognized district leader, writer, speaker, and consultant focused on innovative teaching and transformative leadership. He began his career teaching high school social studies at public schools in Connecticut while exploring emerging instructional design models through graduate research at Columbia University. As his Flipped Classroom approach evolved, Tom began writing and speaking nationally about his practical experiences teaching in blended learning environments. Since 2015, Tom has served in the role of Digital Learning Director for the Bristol Warren Regional School District in Rhode Island.
Shawn McCusker has 25 years of experience as a middle and high school teacher in public, private and alternative schools. In 2006, he was recognized as a finalist for the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. An innovator in the creation and organization of online learning communities such as the #sschat, #1to1techat and #engsschat on Twitter, he is an expert in both iPad and Chromebook integration in the classroom. His innovative lessons and student products have been shared nationwide and have been featured in the Journal, Educational Leadership, and the Huffington Post. In 2016, he was named a Top Trailblazing Educator on Twitter by eSchoolNews.
